In Wasteland 2, you play as a squad of several people, most of whom youll create from whole cloth. Youre encouraged to shape their backstories, craft their skills, and choose their religions, so that you might have a cohesive group that can take on any attacker, and so that you might have ripe material from which to pull creative inspiration as you write your own story. Your team will always be members of the Desert Rangers, a loosely-organized militia that protects what remains of the people that have survived an apocalypse. Your affiliation with this quasi-national group is at times a hindrance, as there are civilians that have been slighted by the organization, and others that retain a deep loyalty because of some prior graciousness.
The first major mission you come across presents you with a choice. There are two places in desperate need of help. One is the last bit of farmland fertile enough to provide food to everyone else in the wastes; the other is the only major source of water left in the deserts of Arizona. You will lose one of them, and those few residents that survive the destruction will hate you. Their friends and relatives scattered around the wasteland will hate you too. It is unavoidable. No matter how far you progress, you will never be able to repair all that ails the land, see every possible sight, or assist everyone in need. Theres a sense of fatalism about the limits of organization, about the boundary of governments, that feels almost anarchic. Even kindness isnt universally helpful.
One particularly tough scene had me slowly watching a woman die as she begged my squad to put her out of her misery. Trying to show an ounce of mercy in an otherwise cold and macabre place, I agreed. A child saw me and ran to tell his family, another group I had agreed to help by finding their stolen pigs. They were terrified of me, and left their home without food and water. They probably died.

Rich descriptions do a fantastic job of keeping the solemn, mournful atmosphere consistently at the forefront.

It was these little vignettes that dominated my time with Wasteland 2. Finding people in need, or encountering the remnants of some long past conflict, is the heart of the experience. The slow pacing and long stretches of silence, occasionally punctuated by the sound of a dot matrix printer ticking off vivid descriptions of the vistas and characters you encounter, create a rich atmosphere for classic role-playing. Most of Wasteland 2 takes place inside your own head as you wrestle with dozens of moral choices, build connections between disparate events, and try to grasp the big picture. Youll only ever have your experience, though. Your piece, your perspective, is all the context youll ever have, and from that youre tasked with trying to make complex decisions and hope that your net good (or, if youre a sadist, net evil) shines through whatever missteps you may make. Even wandering around, mindlessly fighting raiders ad infinitum, is a distinct choice with distinct consequences. Ignoring your duties means that people die. In the same way that nothing exists without some implicit statement about politics or morality, theres no avoiding the larger themes and conflicts here. From the moment you step into Wasteland 2, you are always making choices about the way you influence the game world.
When it does come time to fight, your choices are similarly varied. Wasteland 2 supports a huge breadth of combat styles. Each tile-based, tactical battle is distinct and opens with dramatic visual fare and a message saying “Encounter Begins.” From there, you select actions for each member of your squad. Moving, attacking, reloading, taking cover, unjamming weapons, and performing impromptu surgery are all on the potential action menu. These actions require a certain number of action points based on your characters core attributes. Theres a lot of latitude here, however, as you can reserve some points to give yourself a boost next turn, or dump them all into an ambush in a bid to play more defensively. When enhanced by a robust item set, your tactical approach is nearly limitless: the kind of armor youre wearing and the food youve eaten are just a few of the considerations that can affect combat. At one point, I had a heavy fist-fighter and decided to set her up with some good armor because she was often taking too much damage. While the suit offered better protection, it also dramatically reduced her ability to move around the battlefield. That led me to have her always leading the squad so shed be closer to the action, wouldnt have to move as far, and was still adequately protected. You can destroy some parts of the environment to open up new ways to attack, or you can use a particularly fast character to lead an opponent around the battlefield, pulling fire away from your main group. Its an open system that encourages you to vary your approach, but that depth is only apparent at higher difficulties. On easier settings, theres no need to employ greatly complex tactics.


The moments in which Wasteland 2 fell short for me were those when I was acutely aware of its most antiquated ideas. The game applies skills like lockpicking in wonderfully varied ways, and shows off some impressive level design in the process. Wasteland 2 creates spaces with intricate connections, but that intricacy is wasted given how little agency you often have in the game’s world. You may approach a circumstance in a specific way, only to discover that the events that follow are left to chance, robbing you of a sense of control over the progression. This feature may be meant to call back to the inherent randomness of pen and paper games like Dungeons & Dragons, but Wasteland 2 comes up short in such a comparison. Instead of feeling that I could do anything as long as I succeeded in a dice roll, I felt confined by probability.
Fallout 3, by contrast, managed these kinds of conflicts well. It required training in certain skills to use them, but also gave you direct control over the success or failure of a lockpicking or hacking attempt. By leaving that control in your hands, you had agency over your own failure, and when you succeeded, you had reason to celebrate. In Wasteland 2, a game that places such a heavy emphasis on the consequences of your actions and choices, it is frustrating when you’re shown the limitations of those mechanics; when juxtaposed with modern inventory management, level design, and visual presentation, such archaic elements stand out.
In many ways, though, Wasteland 2 represents everything about classic computer role-playing games that the modern iterations of Fallout arent. Where Fallout 3 gives you an extreme amount of general latitude, Wasteland 2 focuses on the narrative minutiae and tangible consequences of your individual actions. Where Fallout 3 tries to craft a broad world that feels whole, Wasteland 2 loosely strings together several locations with hidden connections, with secrets waiting to be discovered and picked over. And where Fallout masterfully uses comedy to lambast the ludicrous tone of paranoia surrounding Cold War America, Wasteland 2 attacks the natural arrogance of the individual. It forces us to confront the painful truth of our own blind self-righteousness, and shows us how childish our own grand plans truly are.

I suspect that D4 creator Swery 65 didnt intend for his lines to take on such sexual meaning, so feel free to disregard the naughty undercurrent. But I also suspect that Swery would approve of my salacious laughter. 

D4 is insanity distilled into adventure-game form, more self-consciously wacky than another Swery game, Deadly Premonition, but more human, too. Or, at least, as human as can be expected for a game in which a grown woman preens herself like a cat and sells you lollipops in the privacy of your own home.

Phillip appears to be high. And you might suspect the same of yourself while playing D4.

Ah yes--that woman is Amanda, and its never clear whether she is (or was) a real feline, or even if D4 protagonist David Young sees her as everyone else does. She slinks around Davids Massachusetts apartment, and swipes and hisses at him like a real cat might on occasion, perhaps due to his inconsistent Boston accent, which comes and goes more often than D4s connections to reality. I recommend cutting the man some slack, however: he lost his wife (and presumably his unborn child) to a violent murder stemming from ex-cop Davids detective work, and his unwavering goal is not just to expose the murderer, but to alter the past in the hope of reuniting himself with the love of his life.
Davids in a unique position to do so thanks to his ability to transcend time and space by inserting himself into the past, though its best not to spend too much time parsing the specifics of Davids skill: logic is a rare commodity in D4, though every event and possibility makes a certain kind of intuitive sense. It would be easy to dismiss the game for its apparent stupidity--this is a game that features a flamboyant (and seemingly gay) fashion designer who claims his mannequin to be his significant other, after all--but D4 is very smart about its stupidity. In cracking open one of the games many magazine articles, I discovered a shrewd and self-aware essay on the insular nature of Japanese culture that compared Japanese social evolution to natural evolution on the island of Galapagos. I didnt expect such thoughtful commentary in a game whose gestures are so very big and loud, yet that commentary is a reminder that when you laugh, D4 is laughing with you.

You can change different characters outfits, and even remove Davids facial hair. That wont keep other characters from talking about your (nonexistent) beard, though.

Like the point-and-click adventures it harks back to, these first few chapters of this episodic game are primarily concerned with narrative, and they accordingly lift ideas from other games that share that inspiration. D4s connection to Myst manifests in the way you move from one pre-prescribed node to the next, rather than walk freely. From these locations, you can swivel in 90-degree arcs, or look slightly to the right or left, to view and interact with the people and objects around you. In other respects, D4 resembles Heavy Rain and Telltales Walking Dead games, in which you perform timed button-presses and stick-wiggles (or arm-swipes and fist-bumps, if you prefer to interact with the game using Kinect, which you can do from beginning to end) that vaguely relate to the melodramatic action occurring on screen. L.A. Noire, too, is invoked in the way D4 has you examining environments and seeking clues to the mystery at hand, though you wont be exercising any ingenuity to decipher what you find: David follows the evidence to its proper conclusion once you collect it.
Like the games it sometimes mirrors, D4 is less concerned with specific interactions than with the events they accompany--and its those events that make the QTE, that widely-hated embodiment of game-design sloth, so joyous in this context. A fistfight aboard a mid-flight jet is a pas de deux of pain in which David engages in ballroom dance with a frightened passenger, hits a baseball with a plastic limb, deafens his opponents by screaming through a megaphone, and dislodges a glass eye, all while cavalierly blowing bubbles. Mimicking these actions using the Kinect enhances the connection you feel with these preposterous moments, which makes it a shame there arent more of them. Basic events like turning and touching arent so compelling, even with motion controls, and for all its improvements, the second-generation Kinect still doesnt correctly react to every movement. Theres no shame in using a gamepad; doing so makes the slower stretches more tolerable.

D4 gets serious on occasion--and such moments work surprisingly well given the games general lunacy.

There are enough of these stretches to make the game occasionally drag, though even the monotony has its own brand of D4 charm. A tall man wearing a surgical mask appears from time to time, ready to confuse you with cryptic comments and piercing stares while he menacingly plays with a knife and fork. He has little to say but uses a lot of words to say it--short words that he stretches into five-second phonetics until youre ready to scream "Just get on with it!" When not grinding to a halt, D4 occasionally enjoys engaging with stereotypes so exaggerated its difficult to tell whether Swery intends to mock the people that perpetuate those stereotypes or the individuals that demonstrate them. Authorial intent aside, I wasnt always laughing. That aforementioned fashion guru, for instance, is a hyperactive vessel overflowing with every effete mannerism imaginable--and the stereotypically gay behaviors he doesnt personify are brushed onto a perpetually snide flight attendant.
D4s charm and cheekiness typically mask its discomforts, however. Davids ex-partner Forrest Kayson (a carryover character from Deadly Premonition, though gussied up in a suit and facial hair here) is a Hoover on two legs, vacuuming up frankfurters four at a time. I cannot remember what the conversation was about; all I can recall is the gross and hysterical display of gluttony gone mad. Even when D4 goes wrong, its difficult to stay mad at it. Depending on the order of the options you choose, you could respond to a query of Whats wrong, with a second Whats wrong?. Elsewhere, a quiz minigame (one of several small detours D4 provides) responds to a correct answer with dialogue assigned to a different and incorrect answer. Little errors abound, and in a game meant to immerse you, they might have been distracting or even game-ruining.

D4 is not an adventure you get lost in, however, at least not in the way you get lost in Mass Effect or Red Dead Redemption. No--D4 is both the game you are playing and your cooperative partner. I was never not aware of its game-ness, I was never swept away into its world, I was never not aware of the real world around me. I do not mean those statements, however, to serve as a criticism. On the contrary, D4 and I laughed together at its own absurdities. How could we not? The game gamifies its own mechanics, for heavens sake, awarding you points for thoroughly examining your surroundings, and taking them away when you interact with people and objects. There are even online leaderboards that somehow rank you against other players, an absurd and unnecessary feature in an absurd game that doesnt benefit from it in any meaningful way. No, I believe D4 understands itself, and I understand it too. It speaks an unusual language, certainly, and I couldnt blame anyone for finding it nigh incomprehensible, or just plain barmy. But if youre foolhardy enough to buy what its selling, then welcome to the D4 Appreciation Society. There are worse clubs to belong to

Hes more skilled than Aiden in the computer security infiltration arts, and hes almost as talented in combat as Aiden. Yet Bad Blood is the furthest thing from a collection of repurposed missions with a character reskin. It introduces a slew of new gameplay features that wouldnt feel out of place had these mechanics been introduced in the original game. 

That includes taking Watch Dogs theme of surveillance to its natural next step: mounting guns on cameras.


I appreciate that Bad Bloods premise is one involving the tying up of loose ends as opposed to the worn out one-last-job narrative at this story might have been. This DLCs three acts--strung together by 10 missions--effectively delve into one of T-Bones many backstories. Its a history with significant baggage, tied to another familiar face: the affected Tobias Frewer. Tobias is crucial to Bad Blood, and his interactions with T-Bone reveal the depth of their shared past. Their sentimental conversations make for convincing exposition; the same cant be said of T-Bones contrived thinking-out-loud narration when hes by himself. He sounds especially unnatural when he comments on radio reports that detail the aftermath of the events of the main game.
Remember how Mission Impossible 2 wasnt so much a John Woo movie as it was a remixed greatest hits edition of John Woos directorial trademarks? This came to mind as I considered Watch Dogs mechanics as a collection of influences from other Ubisoft games. Whenever you make subtle pushing motions to negotiate past a crowd, think Assassins Creed. Tailing targets? Also Assassins Creed. Marking enemies?Splinter Cell. Taking over enemy-controlled territory? Far Cry. The frequent and obvious borrowing isnt necessarily a bad thing: its sensible for projects and same-publisher studios to share design ideas, especially when they work as well as they do in Watch Dogs.
Bad Blood ups the ante with a pimped-out remote-controlled car heavily inspired by the drones in Ghost Recon: Future Soldier. As T-Bones sidekick and mechanical pet, the RC is a handy scout that can access ventilation ducts, and acts as T-Bones eyes for discrete hacking opportunities. The car fits his known penchant for do-it-yourself gadgetry, right down to the RCs electric stun ability. Its an amusing, inventive toy that isnt intended to make up for T-Bones shortcomings, because he doesnt have any (aside from his inability to fit in a vent). In fact, T-Bone is essentially a reskin of Aiden Pierce, except that the latter wields a retractable baton, while the former prefers a taser. Given Bad Bloods modest length, its fitting that T-Bones skill tree be limited, though T-Bone still has access to essential talents pertaining to crafting and firearms use.



Aiden Pierces steady hand and supernatural focus made the majority of Watch Dogs curiously easy. Given how T-Bone is endowed with similar time-bending talents, it is a welcome change to find some difficult combat challenges in Blood Bads third and final act. I cant remember the last time I died this often but didnt suffer aggravation--probably because dying led to more time messing with the games delightful gun-mounted cameras.



Just as Watch Dogs and Bad Blood feature an amalgamation of Ubisoft game designs, this add-on is also an unsurprising compilation of mission types taken from the full game. These includes tailing, chasing, hacking, infiltrating, and escaping--familiar Watch Dogs objectives that occasionally feel different due to minor gameplay tweaks made to Bad Blood (e.g. T-Bones RC). Hacking is given an augmented reality twist; the Watch Dogs minigame of digital pipe-routing can at times be found superimposed in the physical space. Its a new method of visual hacking that befits the Watch Dogs universe, and Im betting that it will make a return in the inevitable sequel. Yet as much as Bad Blood makes use of many unexplored blocks and buildings in Chicago, its puzzling that this DLC reuses at least one area featured prominently in the full game, when so many others would have minimized the sense of repetition. Lastly, the ability to lock enemies in rooms offers a new non-lethal way minimize potential hostilities. Its one of those seemingly sensible and obvious ideas that the main game lacked, and provoked the same "Why didnt we have this before?" feeling The Last of Us: Left Behind did when we finally saw hostile humans being attacked by the infected.


Focus abilities can nerf what is still an engaging combat experience.

After playing as the morally confused and inconsistent Aiden Pierce, it was easy to jump at the opportunity to play as any other member of Watch Dogs ensemble cast, and I would not be opposed to another installment from the dark comedic perspective of fixer Jordi Chin. Bad Blood introduces new mechanics that fit snugly within an already fully-featured world. Its these qualities that make Bad Blood an essential purchase for Watch Dogs fans.

Mastering the basics takes a bit of time--and many, many lives--but once you lock them down, the in-the-zone moments come fast and furious. It quickly becomes super-satisfying to blaze through and buzz around levels, dodging enemies and gathering collectibles as you go. The game never wants you to get too comfortable, of course, so new challenges, obstacles, enemies, and other life-siphoning elements are layered on as you progress through the 200-plus levels.
You need to play with fire to break through ice, for example, and, conversely, make friends with the frozen stuff to defy death beams; portals can pinball you around stages; and end-level objectives, as well as enemies, will similarly warp about to keep you on your toes. Boss encounters break up the more standard challenges (if you can even call them that), requiring you to call on varied strategies, from running like hell to inflicting damage with dash attacks.
Mastering the basics takes a bit of time--and many, many lives--but once you lock them down, the in-the-zone moments come fast and furious.
Ending up on the wrong side of any of these hazards brings instant death, something you can count on experiencing dozens and dozens of times during the games most difficult stages. Lightning quick re-spawns alleviate most of the pain, but I wouldve also appreciated the option to skip the levels that threatened to spike my blood pressure beyond any doctor-recommended level, in the manner of Splosion Man.
While Fenix Rage generally tested my skill more than my sanity, it isnt totally void of infuriating moments. On top of not being able to bypass especially patience-trying stages, its later-level challenges sometimes rely too heavily on chaos over creativity; these areas are simply too cluttered with things that want to kill you, as well as those that require near-constant air-catching because theres no solid--or safe--ground below. Expect Flappy-Bird-levels of frustration.
Despite a few controller-chucking moments, I felt more rewarded than relieved upon completing the games nefarious platforming challenges. Like the titles it takes its inspiration from, Fenix Rage is aimed at a very specific audience; if youre not part of the niche following that measures its fun in blistered thumbs, Fenix Rage wont bring you over to the dark side. That said, if you know what youre signing up for, you will appreciate the opportunity to prolong the pain in a variety of unlockable minigames and modified challenges, some of which are capable of crushing the soul of even the most hardened player. Id still crown Super Meat Boy king of this genre, but thanks to inspired mechanics, variety-packed pacing, and satisfyingly steep challenges, Fenix Rage can proudly stand next to its protein-packed inspiration
