MeeGo soon to be available for some Nokia N900 dual booting fun

The long wait is almost over, dear Nokia N900 owners. The Finnish companys developers are almost done porting MeeGo to the sweet QWERTY slider and promise to release it to the general public in a few days.
The update will be available on the MeeGo site, which should enable dual-booting of Maemo and MeeGo on the Nokia N900 so you can get a taste of the upcoming MeeGo mobile OS.
There is no exact date mentioned for the PR 1.3 update but "quite close now" (MeeGo dev team words, not ours) sounds very promising.
The bad news is that this is a try-at-you-own-risk kind of deal so Nokia wont be offering support for the MeeGo-enabled N900 officially. This is not to say they wont be releasing updates or fixing bugs, but you will be the one taking the risk of something going wrong with the new OS.
So are you on board for the update, or are you going to stick to the dead-end Maemo?

Nokia N8 starts shipping Sep 30 E7 to be announced next week

The long wait isnt over yet - new info says the Nokia N8 will start shipping in late September, at least for those who pre-ordered. In the mean time, the Nokia E7 popped up, reportedly going official as soon as next week.
The Nokia N8 has been on a handful of sites for pre-order, each site citing a different launch date. Some of those dates flew through with no N8 in sight, other dates are always a couple of weeks ahead.

The end just might be in sight though - a Finnish site spoke to Nokias Senior Communications Manager who said that Nokia N8 pre-orders will shipping September 30. He also said that the N8 will cost 499 euros - since weve seen different prices for different countries, that shipping date might be for Finland only.
Still, the Nokia World event is fast approaching (its on September 14 and 15) - there Nokia is expected to unveil the Nokia E7. The E7 is a Symbian^3 phone with a slide out QWERTY and got leaked a few times, with speculation that its the Nokia N9.

Well, its not the N9, but the specs still seem quite impressive - a 4" touchscreen (probably nHD), 3G, Wi-Fi, 8MP camera with dual LED flash and an HDMI port. If these specs pan out, the Nokia E7 should sit somewhere between the Nokia C7 (which has a smaller screen and no QWERTY) and the Nokia N9 (which touts an aluminum body and MeeGo). The Nokia E7 specs are unconfirmed, but that should change next week.

Mobile auction winners should be charged 3 percent of revenue Finance Ministry

Amid differences between telecom operators on spectrum usage charge, the Finance Ministry has suggested that mobile operators winning in the auction should be charged only 3 percent of their revenue as annual fee for radiowaves they hold.

For BWA players, the Department of Economic Affairs (DEA) suggested continuation of 1 percent, but charge them weighted average of 3 percent and 1 percent if they buy spectrum in upcoming auction.

DEA suggested that "in the subsequent auction, whoever participates moves to 3 percent on the entire spectrum hold", an official source said.

The spectrum usage charge (SUC), a bone of contention between leading GSM players and Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance Jio Infocomm, is levied annually as a percentage of revenue earned by telecom companies. It varies from 3 to 8 percent.

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of Indias (TRAI) has suggested a uniform fee 3 to 5 percent from April 1 across the telecom services for the success of the next round of spectrum auction.

GSM industry body Cellular Operators Association of India is demanding that the government implement TRAIs suggestion.

On the other hand, Reliance Jio and Videocon Telecom are opposing any change in existing SUC regime, specially airwaves that have been already allocated.

If TRAIs recommendations are accepted, then it will burden firms holding broadband wireless access spectrum, including Reliance Jio that at present pays 1 per cent spectrum usage charge.

The spectrum auction is scheduled to start from February 3. The applicants include Reliance Jio Infocomm, Vodafone, Airtel, Aircel, Tata Teleservices, Idea Cellular, Telewings (Uninor) and Reliance Communications.

The DEA has suggested some other options as well which include charge of 3 percent on spectrum won in auction. For BWA players, DEA has suggested continuation of 1 percent, but charge them weighted average of 3 percent and 1 percent if they buy spectrum in upcoming auction.

For those who dont buy any spectrum in the due auction, DEA has suggested to charge them as per existing rate slab.

The option suggested by DEA will be discussed at the Telecom Commission meeting scheduled for January 25.

Pantech Vega Note may be launched on the 10th of this month

Pantech is apparently prepping to unveil another phablet, dubbed the Vega Note. This time well get a 5.9" Full HD display, 2.3 GHz quad-core Snapdragon 800, 2 GB of RAM, fast LTE-A support, and Android 4.2.2.

Naming coincidence aside, Pantech seems to be begging for the attention of the big boys legal departments, as the 5.9" phablet is said to come with a stylus and a fingerprint scanner. Korean media is speculating that the wax seal on the back in the launch promo poster is precisely such a sensor, since there is a fingerprint plastered over the promo piece as well.

Besides the Apple iPhone 5s, whose Touch ID scanner is embedded in the home key, we also have the Fujitsu Arrows A outed with a similar circular fingerprint sensor, but placed on the back, and the HTC One Max, whose rear scanner is square, rather than round. This will make the eventual Pantech Vega Note 5.9 phablet the third handset announced with those new fingerprint scanners, marking a trend that is likely to get PhoneArena)
more widespread.(

Rumor has it Lenovo might be interested in HTC

This is a rumor! It will probably be debunked in the next day, so treat it accordingly! According to hear-say, Lenovo and HTC have been in talks for quite some time now, concerning a buyout. HTC buyout, that is, at least that’s what this report is claiming, and, beyond the reports itself, there’s this terrible automated translation and a lot of perspectives getting in the way.

The rumor goes like this: since HTC has posted not-so-good financial numbers, apparently, and reportedly, there have been alleged top-level meetings between Lenovo and HTC executives, back in August. Lenovo has already taken over IBM’s ThinkPad branch, and is a very respectable name in terms of Chinese smartphone manufacturers. There are, of course, no other details, and, as usual, these rumors will definitely generate debunk reports, as well as hurt brand images. Again, treat this accordingly! Pocketnow
