MeeGo soon to be available for some Nokia N900 dual booting fun

The long wait is almost over, dear Nokia N900 owners. The Finnish companys developers are almost done porting MeeGo to the sweet QWERTY slider and promise to release it to the general public in a few days.
The update will be available on the MeeGo site, which should enable dual-booting of Maemo and MeeGo on the Nokia N900 so you can get a taste of the upcoming MeeGo mobile OS.
There is no exact date mentioned for the PR 1.3 update but "quite close now" (MeeGo dev team words, not ours) sounds very promising.
The bad news is that this is a try-at-you-own-risk kind of deal so Nokia wont be offering support for the MeeGo-enabled N900 officially. This is not to say they wont be releasing updates or fixing bugs, but you will be the one taking the risk of something going wrong with the new OS.
So are you on board for the update, or are you going to stick to the dead-end Maemo?

First Look Nokia Lumia 925

Its been more than a year since I reviewed a Windows phone. Back in 2012, it was the Nokia Lumia 800. Today, I was handed with the Nokia Lumia 925 that is launching tomorrow (20 July) in Singapore.

Within the span of the 2 Windows phones, I have reviewed numerous other Android devices. As I held the Lumia 925 for the first time, fond memories flowed back to me.

On first impression, a few things stand out from the Nokia Lumia 925:

1. Premium touch. Nokia cleverly designs the phone with an aluminium frame around the sides while opting for polycarbonate rear face.

2. Straightforward layout. Instead of positioning the connectors and buttons all around the phone, the Lumia 925 puts all the buttons - volume, power, camera - on the right, while the SIM card slot and headset jack on the top.

3. Size. The Lumia 925 has a squarish dimension (70.6 x 129 x 8.5mm) which is more friendly on the hand and for typing in both portrait and landscape compared to most other modern Android smartphones.

Ill be sharing more detailed experience on the new Nokia Lumia 925 over the next few weeks. While I am not a Windows Phone user, I will try not to compare too much with other mobile OS. I am already finding some great stuffs on this new smartphone, and cant wait to share my thoughts.

The Nokia Lumia 925 retails for S$799 in Singapore, available in white, black and grey.

Nokia N8 starts shipping Sep 30 E7 to be announced next week

The long wait isnt over yet - new info says the Nokia N8 will start shipping in late September, at least for those who pre-ordered. In the mean time, the Nokia E7 popped up, reportedly going official as soon as next week.
The Nokia N8 has been on a handful of sites for pre-order, each site citing a different launch date. Some of those dates flew through with no N8 in sight, other dates are always a couple of weeks ahead.
Nokia N8

The end just might be in sight though - a Finnish site spoke to Nokias Senior Communications Manager who said that Nokia N8 pre-orders will shipping September 30. He also said that the N8 will cost 499 euros - since weve seen different prices for different countries, that shipping date might be for Finland only.
Still, the Nokia World event is fast approaching (its on September 14 and 15) - there Nokia is expected to unveil the Nokia E7. The E7 is a Symbian^3 phone with a slide out QWERTY and got leaked a few times, with speculation that its the Nokia N9.

Nokia E7 photos
Well, its not the N9, but the specs still seem quite impressive - a 4" touchscreen (probably nHD), 3G, Wi-Fi, 8MP camera with dual LED flash and an HDMI port. If these specs pan out, the Nokia E7 should sit somewhere between the Nokia C7 (which has a smaller screen and no QWERTY) and the Nokia N9 (which touts an aluminum body and MeeGo). The Nokia E7 specs are unconfirmed, but that should change next week.

WP8 powered Nokia Lumia 920 flagship goes official

WP8-powered Nokia Lumia 920 flagship goes official

05 September, 2012 | Comments (574) | Post your comment
The first big announcement to come at Nokia and Microsoft joint event is the Nokia Lumia 920. As it turned out the recently released teasers were spot on, and this is in fact the first Lumia PureView smartphone.
The Nokia Lumia 920 looks much like the Lumia 900, but comes with a bigger 4.5" 720p PureMotionHD+ (thats ClearBlack on stereoids) display, with curved glass on top of it. It is powered by the Snapdragon S4 chipset with a 1.5GHz dual-core Krait processor and Adreno 225 GPU.

The display is something Nokia is really proud. It’s called PureMotion HD+ and its screen color and brightness will adjusts automatically, depending on the ambient light. If you’ve hoped for an AMOLED screen though, you’ll be disappointed.
Lumia 920 camera comes with the PureView branding, but it packs an 8 megapixel sensor at its heart. It offers a cool new image stabilization that Nokia calls "floating lens" and according to its manufacturer is more effective than the optical image stabilization on many dedicated digicams. Carl Zeiss optics, 1080pvideo recording and an LED flash complete the list of the camera features.

The rest of the specs include NFC and LTE connectivity, 32GB internal memory plus 7GB SkyDrivecloud storage and 1GB RAM. The Lumia 920 weighs 185 grams, supports only micro-SIM cards and lacks a memory expansion slot.
Nokia Lumia 920 runs on the latest Windows Phone 8 OS and will come with various new services such as Nokia City Lens (augmented really app, which lets you find nearby cafes, restaurants etc.), refreshed Nokia Drive and Maps, updated hubs and system apps, etc.
The last feature worth mentioning is the built-in wireless charging. It uses the Qi standard and will be compatible with future accessories. The first supported wireless charging tool is the Fatboy wireless charging pillow. We hope it comes included in the retail package, but that is yet to be confired. Nokia also teamed up with Virgin Atlantic and Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf to put wireless charging stations so you can charge your Lumia 920 even when you are out for a coffee.
The Lumia 920 will launch in glossy white, yellow and black colors. The pricing and availability is yet to be announced.

Nokia N96 Expected To Ship In July

We can expect the Nokia N96 to start shipping soon in July. It will be available for $800 while Play.com has it on the list for about $1200. We have already seen the specs of this phone already that it will has Wi-Fi, GPS, DVB-H mobile tv—all built in, and 5 megapixel camera with dual-LED flash and auto-focus.

Are you ready to spend your $800 for it?

The Nokia N96, which was announced earlier this year at the 2008 Mobile World Congress, is the latest flagship Nseries, sporting a 5 megapixel camera with dual-LED flash and autofocus. This big black beast also includes quad-band GSM (850/900/1800/1900MHz) and WCDMA (2100MHz), WiFi, a built-in GPS receiver, and support for DVB-H mobile television.

The best part of the N96, in my opinion, however, is the innovative kickstand that’s located around the camera lens on the back of the hands. You can flick this little stand out to prop the handset up and watch video no matter where you are. Completely brilliant. The handset also dual-slides like the N95 but adds 2 gaming buttons to the media keys.

Play.com has the handset listed at 599.99 GBP ( $1,200USD) for preorder, saying they expect the handset to be released on the 31st of July. I realize this is a pre-release price, and thus is inflated, but seriously? What else can $1,200 buy you, currently? Well, the first thing that comes to my mind is the 1,111 Double Cheeseburgers at McDonald’s, for starters.

What else could you buy with $1,200, other than an Nokia N96?

(For the record, Nokia’s estimated retail price for the N96 is 404 GBP ($800USD), so don’t get too depressed just yet.)
